Understanding Local SEO.

Local SEO is the process of optimising your website and other online assets such as local citations and directory listings, to maximise the chances of your business being shown when a user performs a search which contains localised search intent signals. These signals can either be explicit or implicit.

Explicit signals:

Include terms such as “near me”, or typically mention a geographic location such as a town/city, or a geographic area, such as a county.

Examples might include:

  • “Taxi companies near me”
  • “Dentist in Oxford”
  • “Local SEO companies in Oxfordshire”
  • "Private schools within 20 miles"

Implicit signals:

Are when search engines understand that users typically want a local solution even if they haven’t explicitly stated one. It normally determines the focus location based on your IP address or GPS coordinates (if enabled), such as on mobile devices.

For example, “car dealerships” will bring up a list of local dealers to you even though you haven’t provided your location.

It’s important to note that the results you see, will often therefore vary based on your location, and the amount of competition. The results for “hairdressers”, for example, are more likely to change as you move around your town or city than results for something with less competition, such as “Plastic manufacturers”.

Benefits of Local SEO:

Put simply - if your target market is local, you cannot afford not to invest in your local SEO. As you will have seen from the stats at the top of this page, the data is compelling and for some businesses, it can be so successful that it dwarfs all other marketing efforts.

  • Can provide a fast way to “rank” on page 1, alongside organic results (when done correctly!)
  • Increases brand awareness
  • Drives higher footfall at optimum times (e.g. when people are nearby)
  • Increase sales revenue
  • Better mobile engagement (finding your phone number, address etc)
  • Provides a competitive advantage
  • Get more positive reviews for your business
  • Drive more relevant traffic to your website
  • Increases trust and confidence
  • Integrates with Voice search such as Siri / Alexa
  • Reduce the need for and costs of advertising

“The BYB team have been nothing short of incredible this year. Their dedication and expertise have completely transformed our online presence, with website clicks more than doubling—from 19.3k to an amazing 39.3k!

What’s even more remarkable is how they have helped us break into entirely new areas of business. A year ago, we had virtually no enquiries for our interior services, but now, thanks to their strategic work, this part of our business is thriving.

They have also been instrumental in building momentum for our fire door wrapping service, setting us up for long-term success. We’re so thankful to have a team as talented, driven, and innovative as BYBs SEO team—they have truly made an extraordinary impact.”

Local SEO for Multiple Locations

Local SEO is fairly easy for single location businesses, but once you start managing multiple locations things can go wrong, fast. In addition, updating multiple listings can quickly become time consuming. Therefore, you need a well thought out, robust local SEO strategy with unique landing pages, NAPW consistency and a process for correctly routing user reviews as part of your reputation management.

Outsourcing your local SEO to our team of experts will save you time and money, enabling you to focus on other areas of growing your business.

Our Local SEO Services

Our local SEO services are included as part of our main SEO services which means they are both powerful and provide exceptional value for money. The following are just a small sub-set of items we can help with:

Google Business Profiles

A Google Business Profile (GBP) is absolutely critical for any business that either:

  • Has a physical presence such as a store, office, clinic or garage which people can visit, or
  • Operates as a “Service area business” where you visit clients at their location (such as a plumber or electrician)

In fact, of all local citations available, we would hazard a guess that, for most businesses, more than 90% of traffic generated from local citations will originate from your Google Business Profile. However, not all businesses are eligible for one.

Part of our local SEO consultancy service includes:

  • Explaining the eligibility requirements
  • Claiming your listing (if applicable)
  • Optimising your listing so you get the best possible performance
  • Ongoing updates (as required)

Local Citation & Directory Listings Management

The term “local citation” basically means any mention of your business online in a local sense. This more often than not, relates to directory listings.

As part of our packages:

  • We set up or claim, and optimise listings on high-quality, beneficial directory sites such as:
    • Bing Places
    • Apple Business Connect
    • Yell.com
    • Yelp!
    • Trip Advisor
  • We focus on quality rather than quantity! Some agencies will offer to list you on hundreds of directories. This can actually do more harm than good.
  • Ensure NAPW (Name, Address, Phone Number, Website) consistency. This is important to help search engines understand when a listing relates to your business

Reviews

High-quality, independent reviews are another important ranking factor. However, take the wrong approach and your listings could get banned (for example - did you know that while you’re allowed to ask, you’re not allowed to pay for or incentivise GBP reviews).

We help our clients secure customer reviews which contain beneficial language to boost SEO in a natural way, whilst simultaneously adding value to future users and complying with various rules and guidelines.

On-Page Local SEO

Maximising on-page opportunities is something which is often overlooked by many agencies. With over 20 years experience, we’ve learnt how to optimise for location-specific terms which include town and city names, in a natural & ethical way which adds value to users.

This can be especially challenging when you don’t have a physical location in a specific locale, as in an attempt to combat doorway page spam, Google is beginning to favour pages where evidence can be provided of a physical and permanent presence within that town or city.

We do not use “Doorway pages”

Local Business Schema

Whilst technically an “on-page” element, it’s worth us highlighting this specifically. In short, schema is industry standard code which allows site owners to provide meaningful information for search engines in a structured and consistent manner.

Local Business schema and Organisation schema allows us to provide search engines with more information about your business such as your:

  • Specific industry (if possible, as not all are defined)
  • Full address
  • Contact phone number
  • Opening Hours
  • Social media accounts
  • And more

How search engines use this information varies, but for some industries such as restaurants it can be used to provide images for your location along with a guide on price range for example.

FAQs

How is local SEO different from standard SEO?

Local SEO focuses on helping to connect users with a local business who provide a given product or service, and is heavily biased by the user’s physical location in relation to local businesses and/or, the use of “near me” or specifically named locales such as a specific town, city, or county.

In contrast, more generalised SEO focuses on increasing visibility of a brand regardless (and of in the absence) of a location focused intent.

How much does local SEO cost?

Due to its importance, for companies who require it we include Local SEO within all of our SEO packages. Prices start from as little as £800 per month, and that provides you with access to a whole host of additional SEO services including content creation, technical SEO improvements and more.

Do you just provide Local SEO for businesses in Oxford?

No. Whilst many of our clients are based in Oxfordshire and love to work with us for that reason, due to our expertise, we have also helped businesses across the UK, and beyond!

Do businesses really need local SEO?

The short answer is if you fall into one of the following two categories, then yes - absolutely:

  • You have a physical presence such as a store and want to increase footfall
  • You run a service area business (such as a plumber) and want to secure more business from your local
  • area
How long does local SEO take?

It really depends on your industry, as niche businesses can rank faster simply due to there being less competition.

It also depends on whether you’re talking about rankings for “organic” local terms, or the “Local Map Pack” (e.g. the images of the map with results which you see on a lot of search pages).

As a very rough guide, we typically advise a period of 6 months before you see a reliable shift with stable results, but please do contact us for a more detailed discussion specific to your business and your industry!

Can you do local SEO without a website?

Yes. Local SEO is possible without a website, but again, it depends on your industry and the level of competition. Contact us if you would like to know more.

What factors might affect my success?

The biggest factors which influence how sites are ranks, and therefore, potentially their performance include:

  • The user’s location at the time they perform a search
  • The number of competitors in a given location
  • How many reviews you have, and the quality of those reviews
  • Whether your listing is correctly and fully optimised
  • NAPW consistency
  • For some sites (such as Yell.com) whether you’ve paid to have a listing boosted or “sponsored” into a top spot

Whilst some of those factors, such as the user’s location, are not necessarily something which we can control, we have the skills, knowledge and experience to maximise relevant catchment areas in an ethical and natural way. Contact us today to learn more.
